Tarot Talk

Next meeting will be September 28th Thursday 6:30pm-8:30pm, here’s the Google Calendar event in case you’d like to copy it to your calendar: Google Calendar Event Tarot Talk

Tarot Talk is a casual drop-in monthly conversation about Tarot and other cartomancy. The meet is open to beginners, enthusiasts, experts, and the curious. We will discuss individual cards and various decks, their uses for: meditation. counseling, intent, superstition, deck structure, pop culture, etc. during the first hour. In the second hour, the conversation will shift into a group reading for one volunteering attendee. There is no cost to attend, but a donation is greatly appreciated.

I attended Tarot Share hosted by Circle Works and run by Jax Rula for many years, and the structure of this meet is based on what I learned from those experiences. On top of the in-person gathering, we can keep the conversation going on a Tarot Talk Discord I have set up.

People are welcome to start arriving at 6:15pm, discussion should get underway starting about 6:30pm. Conversation will shift starting about 7:30pm and we will lock the door to create privacy and a lack of interruption for the reading. We will wrap up at 8:30pm and Dubleve Wands will be open until 9:00pm for any shopping you may wish to do.

The room Tarot Talk will take place in is the Kitchener Waterloo Artists Co-op workshop (next room to Dubleve Wands). The building is zoned for business and residential and those living in the building have the only front of building parking spots. Vendors and visitors will make use of the available street parking. The workshop is located on the right hand side of the building down a flight of six steps. We apologize for the inconvenience this may cause you.

Potion Making for Kids

$80 per person (aged 9+) per class and you can take home a potion of your very own! These are the swirly potions you may have seen on my TikTok feed. They are not for drinking but can be a useful meditation aid. Great to decorate an altar, shelf, or desk.
This is an immersive experience. You will be led by Instructor Jynx Rabbitpaw in the art of potion making with some discussion about the various properties of the magical ingredients. You can take what you learn from the course and make your own potions at home. The course includes: A glass bottle, printed instructions, ingredients to make one potion, potion labels (you can take the extra ones home!), wax seal, trimming to decorate your bottle, a charm, diploma with your class grade (frame not included).

The next class will be October 11, 2023, date to be announced.

The class will begin with health and safety and accessibility overview. You will be provided aprons, but note if you come in costume, and your clothes become stained or dirty, we are not responsible for any damage incurred by participating in this class.

FAQ

q: Can you drink the potions?
a: No. The potions are made to be shaken and to watch the swirls as you focus on the outcome of your meditation. Some potions change colour. Most of the ingredients are safe if digested; but to be on the safe side, best not to ingest since that is not the intention.

q: What goes into a potion?
a: Distilled water, vegetable glycerin, craft glitter, mica powder, food colouring (optional), 70% isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol to prevent mold). During the classes, some ingredients like the craft glitter and mica powder will be labeled with magical names of creatures (and other ingredients) for part of the immersive experience. Students get to keep a label of the real ingredients and the instructions with the pretend ingredients.

q: Do we get to decorate the bottles?
a: Yes, that’s a large part of the class. Once the potion is made, the glass bottle gets to be decorated and sealed. We provide you with an assortment of materials to zhuzh up the bottle’s appearance. We have an assortment of paints, wax, wax seals, trim, and labels. You can even add some small charms, if you wish.

q: Will my clothes get dirty/stained?
a: That is a possibility. I often leave the shop with stains on my sleeves from paints. Wear something you don’t mind getting paint on that will never come off. If you come in a costume and it becomes stained, we will accept no responsibility. You have been warned. This will also be included in class orientation. We do provide aprons.

q: Do we have to bring a bottle from home?
a: You don’t have to provide anything, we have everything you’ll need for this course including several glass bottles to choose from and a variety of corks to stop them with.

q: Do we have to follow the instruction sheet exactly?
a: It is recommended you follow an instruction sheet provided… there may be a special instruction sheet left about here or there to find in the classroom šŸ˜‰

q: Can I make my potion at home?
a: You can certainly make a potion at home. There are tutorials available on Youtube and TikTok, in fact that’s where I’ve gotten the ideas presented in this class from. We do not have a Potion Making kit available at this time for take home; we are in the works to make an at home Potion Making craft kit available for sale. We also are now selling finished potions in decorated bottles in the shop.

q: Can I book a private class?
a: Yes, we are available for private booking of Potion Making and Wand Making classes. Contact us via our portal here.

q: Does the potion class include a charm?
a: Yes, the Potion Making course includes one charm you can use to further personalize and enhance your bottled potion.

q: Can I make a custom charm?
a: Yes, the Potion Making class affords you the opportunity to make your own simple custom charm to attach to your wand. Or you can choose from one of the many charms we already have available on display.

q: Can I get hurt during the class?
a: We will be using hot glue and glue guns that can get as hot as 300 degrees Fahrenheit and 148 degrees Celsius, hot wax, and a lighter; therefore there is a possibility of small and serious burns if one is not dexterous or careful enough. If we do our job right, no one should get hurt. If you feel unsteady or unsure, you can always ask the instructor to take over a particular application for you. There will also be a first aid kit, a sink with cold water, and a health and safety orientation before the class begins.

Wand Making for Kids

Next class will be available in October 18th 2023.

$80 per person (aged 9+) per class and you can take home a magic wand of your very own! These are the same type of wands you may have seen in the physical shop and here online. They are a wonderful cosplay prop with the magical core “spilling” out of the wand.
This is an immersive experience.
You will be led by Instructor Jynx Rabbitpaw in the art of wand making with some discussion about the various properties of the magical ingredients and the mythical creatures they come from. You can take what you learn from the course and make your own wands at home. The course includes: A prepared wooden stick (dried, oiled, sealed), printed instructions, magical core (and adhesives to make them stick), potion labels (to decorate bottles at home!), fabric to decorate your wand handle, a charm (all wands have a link in the butt of the handle to affix a charm to), wand registration form, colouring pages, a wand box to decorate.

The class will begin with health and safety and accessibility overview. You will be provided aprons, but note if you come in costume, and your clothes become stained or dirty, we are not responsible for any damage incurred by participating in this class.

FAQ

q: Can I request a certain type of wood or length for my wand?
a: Yes, we will do our best to accommodate your request and if we cannot meet it, we will let you know. If we cannot find the wood or length youā€™re are looking for, we may make some other recommendations. You can decide if you wish to continue with the Wand Making class or not if we cannot meet your requirements.

q: Can I make my wand from a stick I find on the ground?
a: If you wish to do that, you’ll need to bring your stick to the shop in advance of the class; so that it can be properly treated and sealed (prepped) before the class starts. All sticks at the beginning of class should already be cleaned, waxed, and sealed with the butt of the handle ready to go with a link to hold your charm. Part of why these classes can now exist is because prep work will have been completed for you before class begins. Wands normally require a lot of curing time between steps, days worth.

q: Can I take my wand home with me at the end of the wand making class?
a: Yes, because most of the curing time is taken care of prior to the class, you will be able to take your wand home at the end of the class.

q: Will my clothes get dirty/stained?
a: That is a possibility. I often leave the shop with stains on my sleeves from paints. Wear something you don’t mind getting paint on that will never come off. If you come in a costume and it becomes stained, we will accept no responsibility. You have been warned. This will also be included in class orientation. We do provide aprons.

q: Do we have to follow the instruction sheet exactly?
a: It is recommended you follow an instruction sheet provided, but if you wish to try something different, ask the instructor for the best way to go about it.

q: Can I make a wand at home?
a: You can certainly make a wand at home. I have been making wands since 2009 and have come up with several tips and tricks to make my wands unique and beloved and I’m happy to share that information with you. We do not have a Wand Making kit available at this time for take home; we are in the works to make an at home Wand Making craft kit available for sale. We always have dozens of wands on display for sale in the shop.

q: Can I book a private class?
a: Yes, we are available for private booking of Potion Making and Wand Making classes. Contact us via our portal here.

q: Do wands come with boxes?
a: Yes, every wand is supplied with a storage box you can write it’s unique stats onto. You can take the wand and the box home with you.

q: Does the wand class include a charm?
a: Yes, the Wand Making course includes one charm you can use to further personalize and enhance your wand. All Dubleve Wands are made with a link in the butt of the handle you can affix your charm to with a clasp.

q: Can I make a custom charm?
a: Yes, the Potion Making class affords you the opportunity to make your own simple custom charm to attach to your wand. Or you can choose from one of the many charms we already have available on display.

q: Can I get hurt during the class?

If you feel unsteady or unsure, you can always ask the instructor to take over a particular application for you. There will also be a first aid kit, sink with cold water, and a health and safety orientation before the class begins. The small class size of only four students at a time will help mitigate the risk immensely.

Witchy Market 2023

This will be the third Witchy Market, three times the charm! Welcome back for another year of shining a light on our weird and wonderful local crafters of spooktacular wares. Last year was such a wonderful and positive experience all around, we’re back by popular demand. As vendors become confirmed, we’ll post links to their website or Instagram right here.

If you’d like a Free Ticket, get one here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/witchy-market-tickets-710453765337
Drop-ins welcome, tickets available at the door, tickets give us a sense of reaching capacity.

This year we’re expanding! We can fit more than a dozen vendors into the Community Room, and we’ll be vending for not just one day, but for two! Some vendors can only join us for one day; so we’re happy to announce that we will be offering more vendors than last year by allowing some vendors to switch out between Saturday and Sunday. Other vendors will be joining us for both days. And we’re taking over the neighbouring Optimist Room specifically for readers in order to offer a quiet space away from the bigger crowds to consult Tarot or other divination tools.

Once again we’ll be located in the Community Room at the Albert McCormick Community Centre in Waterloo.

If you’re interested in becoming a vendor or reader, you can apply using the Google Form linked here. Applications are starting to come in very fast, now. There are only a couple of spots left! We only have two readers confirmed at the moment, so if you’d like to divine for someone, please apply. Preference will be shown to local handmade goods and those who complete registration. Don’t forget to provide your contact name and email address, not just the name of your business.

Here’s a list of our confirmed vendors:

Festivals and Classes

We will not be at a festival until the Ontario Pirate Festival (Piratefest) this August. Instead, the shop will be focusing on providing the classes the public has been asking for. As you can see from the right column on our site, links are up to find out more about the Potion Making and Wand Making classes. You can attend as many of these classes as you like. Each class provides you with one wand and one potion to take home. I’m really excited to finally be able to offer classes to the public. It’s been a long road.

I will, as I always do, be wearing a mask while I instruct. Students of these classes are not obliged to do the same. But if you wish to ensure a class you attend is masked, I can help to accommodate that.

I also have some vendors already signing up for this years Witchy Market. It will once again be at the Albert McCormick Community Centre in North Waterloo. This time I’m also booking the room next door for private readings, so it will be nice and quiet in there. Everyone had a blast last year and it feels really good to say the market is coming back by popular demand.

There is also an outcry that Kitchener-Waterloo needs more fantasy themed markets. I’m in talks to try and make one happen in the Spring of 2024. I’ll be very happy to announce more details on that as we continue to scheme away. If you want to be part of the conversation, please comment on this post any ideas you have about us doing a fantasy market locally.

I think I will only plan two a year myself. The Witchy Market in October seems to be a hit. A fantasy market in Spring (hopefully outside, but possibly still indoors) is an exciting prospect. I’m looking at May. And classes during the hotter months held in my lovely cool basement shop are just going to be a simple joy to offer.

If you have any thoughts or concerns about where Dubleve Wands is headed in the future, and if you’d like to tag along for the ride, please share your thoughts with me. Would love to hear your feedback.

Have a magical day, all.

AI Art

I think I know where AI art could be helpful. Iā€™m an artist. I have a style. Iā€™d like it if I had a bot trained by my art I could use to create my own work. Not trained by other artists. Just trained by me. And as I create new art and improve, I could improve it. It would save me time and money and save my clients time and money.
The bots trained on art by artists without their consent is tantamount in my mind to hiring a counterfeiter. They churn out work quickly for a fraction, itā€™s rough and details are missing. You still need an artist to finish and make sense of it. But itā€™s good enough to sate curiosity, give someone a laugh, or be entertaining.
Many people are creating images they never would have before; because it was cost prohibitive, the majority of people canā€™t draw, and itā€™s free to showcase the ability of the AIā€¦

But some websites are encouraging AI prompters to sell their AI generated work as though itā€™s their own original work. And that itā€™s criminally negligent of Ytse* now isnā€™t it?
Weā€™ve now had an AI art generator prompter threaten to sue another prompter because the AI spat out a similar image because the ā€œprompt was copiedā€.

ā€¦

The world always goes mad before it goes sane again.

The tech industry often wonā€™t ask permission, because they donā€™t want to be told no. Itā€™s better to ask forgivenessā€¦ get sued by artists in a class action kind of way.

Is AI evil? Itā€™s not true thinking for itself AI. Itā€™s a copy and collage tool the tech dream team made without permission from the sources and therefore theyā€™re facing the consequences of their assumptions.
Is AI art free? There is a cost. Or rather, weā€™re trying to figure out how to conscientiously use it for profit in a fair and safe way to benefit all.
Is it fun? Depends if you can make art for free with it. I have no doubt there will be some artists who would happily give some of their experimental art to such programs for a pittance if theyā€™d been given the option. Permission should have been asked. Then a guilt free product would exist. Then it could be fun for all.
Have I enjoyed any AI art? I have. I thought John Oliver marrying a cabbage was extra special.

And I would love if this becomes a product I could train to help me produce more of my own art. A sketching tool I could use to speed up my process up would be ideal. If a sketch could take minutes instead of hours, awesome. If itā€™s trained by my style and only my style, fantastic.
Thatā€™s where I see one facet of this headed.
The other is a generator of profile thumbnails for OCs. People have been using these AI generators for that left, right, and centre.
Another is to create joke images for television sitcoms and late night. Shows are already using it.

What Iā€™m saying is, itā€™s time for these AI generated things to not be free anymore. Theyā€™ve made the rounds. Letā€™s see how valuable humanity finds them? What are we willing to pay to use them? When AI generated art is no longer free, that will change the tone of those on the side of the technology developers and defending them. It will change the tone of the lawsuits. It will change everything in these matters. And I want to see what the cost to artists wanting to use this technology will be.

Will tech companies get into the business of making art: replacing graphic designers, fleecing talent, or will everything newly generated look like it came from centuries ago; because thereā€™s few copyrights in old galleries and museums. Rhetorical questions.

When the free-to-try trials are no longer free, when the gavel comes down on the lawsuit(s), weā€™ll see that even this new tool will have a value and a cost associated with it.
People wanting to use it, being curious about using it, already shows itā€™s got value and worth.

*Name scrambled to protect my butt as what Iā€™ve heard is hearsay. I donā€™t personally work with this company.
